Case Study

Ms. Kim is the principal of a kindergarten. After the first year of settling into her new role of a supervisor, she increasingly broadened her interest beyond her own setting. She took part in different working parties increasing her knowledge of the sector and began writing for articles for pre-school magazines. She enrolled into a master’s program specializing in ECE.

In her initial assessment she observed her team was disinterested and unwilling to go on formal courses for training. She wondered if low salary, overload of work, dissatisfaction of their role, or lack of positive team culture were the causes to for such attitude. In the past in a team of 15 members the principal has always taken control and lead with authority.

Disagreements developed over practice, staff behavior and relationship amongst the team members and management is leading to deterioration in children’s behavior, whereby even the academic performance is affected.

Another observation made was the content of the curriculum needs to focus on children’s needs abilities. The activities are more teacher-led and assessments could be better done. The team lacks being innovative and creative to involve the neighborhood / community /local services in their teaching practices.

In another instance she overheard a conversation at the reception about where a parent who was new to the district and wanted to enroll her child in the kindergarten, but none of the neighbors or anyone mentioned this school’s name and it was never heard of.

Parents have complained about teachers not following up with their concerns mentioned and the snacks served are not very healthy were mentioned in many such instances.

Since enrollment was low, Kim discussed with senior management and thought it’s time to think about other alternatives for increasing the admission no. and gradually wants to promote a more inclusive practice into school culture and support families with support services. She needs to work on how this can be implemented in the settings.

2. Using the attached template choose any two changes from the above and follow up by planning   two professional development approaches that you would take to implement the change in your next academic school year.
